Definition of Mobile Number Portability (MNP) :
Mobile number portability (MNP) is the process of transferring (porting) your mobile phone number from one mobile phone network provider (i.e. mobile operator) to another. You may want to do this if you wish to sign up to a new mobile phone provider (i.e. mobile operator) and keep your original mobile phone number, thus saving you the inconvenience of updating your contacts with your new telephone number. Mobile number porting is becoming increasingly popular worldwide due to the savings that can be made by switching mobile phone providers (i.e. mobile operator) in order to get a better mobile phone tariff.
Some facts about MNP :
• Date of Implementation in INDIA : 20th January 2011
• Required time to port : 7 days
• Fees : INR 19 i.e. INR 10 fees for porting & INR 9 will be given as initial balance amount for pre-paid customers. (Free in-case of BSNL)
How to port mobile number?
• Buy a new SIM and fill Customer Enrollment Form (CEF) and Mobile Number Portability (MNP) form. Submit both the forms with other required documents to the retailer or at any outlet.
• To enjoy the benefits of the new network operator, simply send an SMS: Port XXXXXXXXXX (i.e. Current 10 digit Mobile Number) through the number to be ported out to the Toll Free Number 1900.
• A 8 digit code through SMS Unique Porting Code(UPC) would be generated through which the porting process would be initiated. The generated UPC is valid only for 15 days from the date of generation.
• You will immediately receive an SMS confirming port order. Later, you will receive another SMS confirming the date and time of porting. At the scheduled date and time replace your old SIM with your new SIM.
Terms & Conditions for porting a number :
• Your mobile connection must be active on the network of your existing service provider since more than 90 days.
• If you are currently a postpaid customer, then please ensue that you’ve paid all the dues as per your last bill.
• If you are currently a prepaid customer, then all your available balance with existing service provider will lapse after completion of the transfer.
• You’ll not be able to cancel your transfer request after completion of 24 hours from date of submission of MNP request.
Can existing service provider stop you from joining new network?
Yes, when we send the MNP transfer request on your behalf, your existing service can reject the request due to any of the below mentioned reasons:
• Any overdue bill with existing operator.
• Mismatch between UPC provided to operator and actual UPC generated for your number.
• Your number is in deactivated state.
• Your number is less than 90 days old with your existing operator.
• If there is any ownership change request pending with your existing operator.
• In case your number has special exit clause and the exit clause is not met by you. For example: Special bundle offer, special offers to vendors\business partners etc.
• If porting for your number is prohibited by the court of law.
What will happen to the balance in my account post transfer?
The available balance in your account with your existing service provider will lapse post transfer of your number, thus we recommend you to use all your balance before the day of transfer.
During mobile number portability data balance will transfer or not?
No. Data balance will not be transferred during or after the mobile number portability.
Can I go back to my original service provider after getting transferred?
As per the government guideline, In case you wish to move back to your previous service provider then you may submit a request for same after completion of 90 days on the network of your new service provider.
Can I get my request cancelled at any time before transfer?
You can place the request for cancellation of port-in request with operator within 24 hours from the time of placing the port-in request.
Can I get multiple numbers transferred at the same time?
Yes, you can get multiple numbers which are under your name transferred at the same time.

Dear Atul Sir,
I have been reading your both blogs, the things you have written are extreamly good & very much helpful. Thank you very very much sir!
This post helped me lot in porting my no.
Thanks a lot Raj
Dear atul,
yesterday i came to know that the MNP ported number does not get all the same benifit as the other non ported no gets….
there is the diffrence in recharges….. as some recharges cannot be used on ported no.. and gernal no. will get its benifit…
is there any such type of clause……
Hi Jay,
There is no such clause in Mobile Number Portability (MNP). Ported no.s will get all the facilities & benefits that non ported or regular no.s are getting, cause if so why people would have ported their no.s.
mobile connection must be active on the network of your existing service provider since more than 90 days in MNP
if mnp is done before 90 days on the network of existing service provider what will happen ??
please guide me
thanks in advance
Hi Roshan,
Before porting your no. you must use the no. for atleast 90 days or more, after 90 days you can port your no. to any operator you wish to.
Once you port your no. & you found that the operator to which you ported your no. doesn’t suites you & your requirements; you can port your no. back to old one or any other operator after 90 days of usage i.e. you cannot port your no. within 90 days & you will have to use it for atleast 90 days.
I would like to change my operator from videocon to Aircel, but every time i got rejected by datacom (GSM). Kindly give solution or reason for the rejection of my number.
Are you using postpaid connection & please check of any bill is pending or not?
Thanks to Atul sir for help
Welcome Ashok!

Thanks Aseem!

Welcome Siddhesh & glad to hear that. 🙂

Please contact your service provider, I cannot help you in porting number back or getting your number back if someone has taken your number. If you feel that your number is been hacked or something, launch a police complaint with a copy to service provider.
Hi Atul,
Got a problem with porting. I’ve recently ported to BSNL from Vodafone. Vodafone unbilled was cleared but rental was pending after new bill generation. I got sms asking to clear that amount. Even after clearing that amount my service has been barred and both Vodafone and BSNL are saying they are not responsible. What can be done please suggest.
sir i ported from idea to airtel .but my airtel number is not activated, what to do,,,talk to call centre but they said that your number is not iported fully and idea customer said that your number is ported.
1. Have you received the sms while porting and you have submitted the unique no. from the sms?
2. Have you received sms that change your SIM after some date & time?
If both the answers are YES, your no. is ported successfully; ask Airtel otherwise ask Idea for details.
hii atul,
i m using an idea no. for last 7-8yrs. bt now i want to switch over to aircel n dnt remember from whom documents i bought dis no. can u plz help me how can i know abt it. bcoz only after knowing abt d documents i can change my network. m i ryt atul?
Hi Sweety,
IT does not matter from where you have taken SIM but if you know that SIM is on your name only, apply for porting and submit new documents to operator you are willing to port your number.
I was having special offer for 2 months.. (Docomo)..so I can’t transferr to new network (Vodafone)..what should I do?
Dear Pinak,
To apply for MNP, you need to be user of particular operator for atleast 3 months. If you are using service of DOCOMO more tha 3 months then only you can apply for MNP.
Hope you get your answer.
If you still have any query, let me know.

If your porting is done and using new sim from new operator, You can do online recharge or use paper voucher. As of you have ported number, it will show old operator. Use paper recharge of new operator only.

No
How to ask a question i am in a big problem regarding mnp
Ask what so ever is your doubt, I will try my best to answer you.
I was using an idea number since 2004. i ported my number to aircel in 2012. due to network problems i again ported my number to airtel earlier this month. but after activation of the services of my number the number got barred after 5 days. airtel says that u have commited a fraud. i requested them many times and mailed them but they did not activated my number. Now please tell me that my number was an idea number. when airtel disconnected my number can i get the same number as a new connection? if yes then airtel will issue me the number or this number will be returned to idea and then i can get it from idea store and after how many days?
Please check with Airtel that what do they mean by fraud? What was the actual issue?
i have a Docomo number since 2010 and I want to port to idea, I don’t know by which name I purchased the sim..but I am sure it not me..so will I able to port the number by giving my voter id Xerox ? Plz help..
Yes, you can. But some operators do not allow it. Make sure your operator does.
Hello sir by mistake I submitted porting code to new service provider before 2 days of completion of 90 days. Means on 88th day. Now my application has been rejected by new service provider and I am still using old network service. After 90 days I again requested for porting code but they are sending the same porting code which was rejected by new service provider. It has a 15 days validity. So whether I have to wait for 15 days more or I can submit the same code another service provider?
Hey Amey,
You will have to wait for 15 days since that code is rejected already and after 15 days again apply for the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) and you will get the new code. This time give it to the operator you want to switch with.
Hi,
One of my friend raised a request forporting from Vodafone to Airtel.
The number was a postpaid number with CUG plan. all the bills are beaed by my friend only.
Now, vodafone is not accepting the port request and asking for NOC form company where he is working.
Is there any norms that they need a NOC before porting ?
Yes, if number is part of CUG plan you will need NOC from company to port your number or to avail MNP (Mobile Number Portability)
sir, i am using aircell no 9060922003 from last 4 year.
sir now i want port my no to tata dokomo.
After submitting my documents, i got a message that UPC MISMATCH.

UPC means Unique Porting Code which allow you to transfer your existing mobile phone number from one mobile phone network provider to another mobile phone provider whike keeping your existing mobile phone number.

Hi Mitul,
Many times it is seen that operators do not update the database and people get sms from old operator. Even I get sms from my old operator and calls too.
You can port your number again but only after 90 days of activation after porting.
My new sim card has been lost. The original one is yet to get shifted. What can I do in this case to get the new operator’s simcard with my original number.
Please mail your suggestions to:
mayankjogani69@gmail.com
Apply for another sim card and they will give. Operator will take a blank sim and will map it with your number. But this time they will charge you something. Charges will be as per operator.
